Lots to talk about

Hi guys, I realize our blog posting has been a little lacking recently, but never fear, the less we blog the more exciting changes are around the corner.

Here’s a brief overview of a few of the milestones we hit this month.

We incorporated in Delaware. (For the amount of money we paid, the photocopied certificate of incorporation was a bit of a let down.)

We moved to California. Fun in the sun, sure beats the snow of Michigan (but it’s summer).

We printed stickers. If you found one of our stickers a Apple’s WWDC or somewhere in San Francisco, take a picture of it and send it in for a discount on Hab.la. Roland will be trying to hand out as many cool Hab.la stickers as possible this summer.

Other things to come. (I don’t want to give too much away), but we have a planned server migration coming up (to Rackspace) and some hot new features on their way.

Oh yea, and check out our one click account creation for Gmail users.

Ejabberd2 Upgrade

We upgraded our version of ejabberd to ejabberd 2.0.3 today from 1.6. The new upgrade should insure that bugs kicking around in ejabberd do not cause problems with Hab.la. There were also a few backend fixes wrapped in there, but we’ll talk about them in a few days after the next feature release.

UPDATE:

Some of you might have noticed some issues with Gtalk and Hab.la shortly after I posted this notice, I managed to fix these issues on monday, but apparently there are some problems with ejabberd 2.0.3 and openssl 0.9.8j. (See Bug report 877). Interestingly this is a bug that may be fixed in subversion, but is definitely still an issue for the source download from the ejabberd website.

Hab.la now supports Google Talk

Astute users may have noticed that we very quietly rolled out a new feature last week: Hab.la now works directly with your existing Google Talk account. Here’s how to add Google Talk to Hab.la.

First, log in to Hab.la and go to the account settings panel. You’ll notice a new section for “Other Chat Networks”.

Click on the “Google Talk” link and add your Gmail address. Then press “Save.”

GTalk will now show up as active.

Now log in to Google Talk. Hab.la will send you some chat invitations over the next few minutes. Approve each one by clicking “yes.”

That’s it. Now, when you’re signed in to Google Talk, visitors to your web site will be able to chat with exactly as they can with your regular Hab.la account. In addition, any other Jabber-based chat network that supports the server-to-server protocol (“S2S”) will work in the exact same manner.

We’re working on connecting more big chat networks with Hab.la, but each one has its own quirks. Look for more options in the coming months.
